A man may need a clean well-lighted place. I need a place where I can stand and look and not be distracted by the needs of my personal life. This is why I am most at ease in a swamp or along the banks of a stream with only the sounds of life’s movement. Places like the backwater at Thwing’s Point along the Kennebec River give me this respite. Yet unspoiled by man’s intervention and yet to be destroyed by pollution or development the swamps and streams provide essential habitat for so many strata in the Natural Kingdom.
